Spotlight on Kenyan Music Vol. 4
Spotlight on Kenyan Music Vol. 4
It is with much pride and enthusiasm that Alliance Française de Nairobi presents the 4th volume in the Spotlight on Kenyan Music series. A compilation of traditional music successfully arranged to contemporary rhythms, it keeps an authentically Kenyan character. In its 4th year, Spotlight on Kenyan music has continued to broaden its net, reaching out to musicians across the country with the assistance of the Department of Culture’s network of cultural offices. A record number of 231 musicians participated in the auditions this year. The four preliminary concerts in the Alliance Française garden stage showcased Kenya’s musical diversity stretching from Lake Victoria through to the mountainous terrains of Central and Rift Valley provinces and from the arid zones of Eastern and North Eastern provinces down to the coastal belt of the Indian Ocean. The best of this musical journey are featured on this album.
Spotlight on Kenyan Music is a cultural cooperation programme initiated by the Alliance Française in 2005, with the support of the Embassy of France in Kenya and Total Kenya Ltd, and with the Department of Culture as partner. It aims at popularizing Kenyan afro-fusion music as to ensure the legacy of Kenya’s musical traditions in a world where intangible heritage is increasingly at risk of being eroded.
